Tractor steering systems are crucial systems utilized to control the steering and maneuvering capabilities of a tractor.

Tractor Steering Systems: Types and Key Spare Parts

Tractors are extremely important machines in the agricultural and construction sectors. One of the key components responsible for controlling these machines is the steering system. Therefore, it is important for users to be aware of the steering systems used in tractors and some of the key spare parts associated with these systems. In this way, any malfunction can be detected early and prevented from causing major problems.

What is a Tractor Steering System?

The tractor steering system is a mechanism used to control the direction and manoeuvrability of a tractor. It allows the tractor to move in the desired direction by turning the front wheels.

Tractors generally have either a front-wheel or four-wheel steering system. With front wheel steering, the steering linkage is connected to the tractor's front wheels, causing them to turn in response to steering input. This system is more commonly used and is preferred on small and medium-sized tractors.

Four-wheel steering is used on larger and more complex tractors. With this system, both the front and rear wheels of the tractor respond to steering input. As a result, the tractor has better maneuverability with a smaller turning radius. The four-wheel steering system is particularly useful for increasing the mobility of the tractor in fields or in confined spaces.

What Types of Steering Systems are There?

The steering systems used in tractors are mechanisms that allow the driver to steer the tractor. The most common steering systems used on tractors are as follows:

  • Mechanical: Mechanical steering systems are simple and robust systems that work through mechanical linkages in the tractor. They transmit steering movements from the driver to the wheels, thus determining the direction of the tractor.
  • Hydraulic steering: Hydraulic steering use hydraulic pressure to transmit steering movements. These systems allow the driver to control the steering more easily and precisely by using hydraulic fluid.
  • Electric steering: Electric steering systems use electric motors and sensors to transmit steering movements. These systems offer greater precision, lower power consumption and additional features.
The variety of steering systems allows the selection of systems suitable for specific tasks, maximising efficiency.

What Spare Parts are Available for Steering Systems?

Tractor steering systems work in conjunction with a number of important spare parts that ensure the correct and safe operation of the steering system.
Some of the main parts used in tractor steering systems are:

  • Steering pump: The steering pump provides hydraulic pressure in hydraulic steering systems. Pumps play a vital role in transmitting steering movements and ensuring the proper functioning of the system.
  • Steering column: The steering column is connected to the steering wheel and transmits steering movements. This part is essential for correct and safe steering.
  • Steering shaft and joints: The steering shaft and joints are essential components that connect the steering column to the wheels. These parts transmit steering movements to the wheels, ensuring accurate steering of the tractor.
  • Steering bearings: Steering bearings are replacement parts that facilitate the smooth transmission of rotary motion in the steering system. They reduce friction, allowing the steering system to operate more smoothly and efficiently.
  • Steering tie-rod ends: Steering tie-rod ends are connecting elements that transmit movement from the steering system to the wheels. These replacement parts ensure accurate and precise operation of the steering system.
  • Steering Boot: The steering boot is a flexible component that connects the steering column to the steering shaft. This part facilitates the proper transmission of steering movements and prevents the ingress of dust and dirt.
  • Steering hydraulic hoses: Steering hydraulic hoses allow hydraulic fluid to flow in hydraulic steering systems. These hoses ensure proper and safe transmission of steering movements.
