Which Tractor Spare Parts Should Be Checked Before Winter?

Tractors are of great importance in agriculture and land works. However, when the winter months arrive, the performance of tractors may decrease. Harsh conditions such as cold weather, snow and ice can negatively affect the efficiency of tractors. For this reason, tractor maintenance is required for uninterrupted operation in winter. Therefore, it is of great importance to check certain spare parts before winter.

Spare Parts Check Before Winter

Tractor spare parts must be checked before winter. It is extremely important to carry out these checks on time, both to avoid costly breakdowns and to ensure safety. So, what should be considered when checking spare parts?

Tractor Battery Should Be Checked

Cold weather negatively affects the performance of tractor batteries. The charging capacity of batteries decreases at low temperatures. This can make it difficult to start tractors.

The battery should be checked for tractor maintenance before winter. The voltage level of the battery should be measured and charged if necessary. The terminals should also be cleaned and oxidation should be prevented.

Engine Oil and Oil Filter Should be Changed

During the winter months, engine oil becomes more dense. This situation causes the engine to struggle. For this reason, engine oil should be changed before winter. Especially low viscosity oils should be preferred. You should also make sure that the oil filter is clean. Old oil filters can negatively affect the performance of the engine. It is therefore important to change the filters.

Check the Condition of Tractor Tires

Road grip is of great importance during the winter months. Tractor tires play a critical role in difficult terrain conditions.

Tread depths of tires should be checked for tractor maintenance before winter. Because worn tires increase the risk of slipping. In addition, tire pressure may decrease in cold weather. The pressure should therefore be checked regularly.

Cooling System and Antifreeze Level Should be Checked

Cooling the engine in tractors becomes even more important in winter. Antifreeze used in the cooling system prevents freezing.

Antifreeze level should be checked before winter. If it is missing, it should be completed and the antifreeze mixture ratio should be brought to the appropriate level. Radiator hoses should also be checked. Old and cracked hoses should be replaced.

The Condition of the Brake System Should be Reviewed

Brake systems are of great importance for the safety of tractors. During the winter months, brake performance must work at full capacity. Brake discs and pads should be checked and worn ones should be replaced. Brake hydraulic oil levels should also be checked. In case of deficiency, appropriate hydraulic oil should be added.

Air and Fuel Filters Should be Replaced

Air and fuel filters used in tractors directly affect the performance of the engine. In winter months, clogging of these filters can cause the engine to struggle. Especially the air filter allows the engine to breathe. Therefore, it negatively affects performance when clogged. These filters should be cleaned or renewed for pre-winter tractor maintenance.

Check the Starter Motor and Alternator

Cold weather in winter can strain the starter motor of tractors. For the starter motor to work properly, the condition of this part is as important as the battery level.

The starter motor should be checked before winter. Also, the alternator should be checked whether it is working properly. Alternator failures can prevent the battery from charging and cause tractors to remain on the road.

Hydraulic System Oil and Hoses Should be Checked

Hydraulic systems in tractors fulfill many functions. During winter months, the viscosity of hydraulic oils may increase and this may decrease the performance of the system. For this reason, the hydraulic oil level should be checked for tractor maintenance before winter and oils with appropriate viscosity should be used if necessary. Hydraulic hoses should also be checked. Hoses with cracks or leaks should be replaced.

Lighting Systems Should be reviewed

Tractor lighting systems are of great importance in winter due to the short days and reduced visibility. Headlights, signals and tail lights should be checked. Burnt bulbs should be replaced. Electrical cables should also be reviewed. Because cold weather can reduce the flexibility of the cables and cause breakage.
