Volvo Safety

Volvo has been marketed for many years for their robustness and reliability. Because the company has worked to increase vehicle safety long before states began to prioritize automobile safety:

  • In 1956, Amazon started using a dashboard filled with felt or a softer material.
  • In 1958, the company's engineer Nils Bohlin invented the 3-point seat belt. It also got a patent. At the same time, this seat belt is used in all vehicles today.
  • In 1959, while most cars did not have seat belts, the 3-point seat belt, which was invented, started to be used as a standard in Volvo's vehicles.
  • In 1964, i produced the first rear-facing child car seat.
  • In 1986, it started to use the stop lamp located on the rear window of the car. Today, stop bars have become standard in most cars.
  • In 1991, it developed the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS). Thanks to this system, in any impact from the side, the energy generated is removed from the door and transferred to the security cage.

Meaning of Three Digit Model Codes

In 1968 Volvo started giving three-digit numbers to its cars. These numbers start with the 140 series. What the company is aiming for in these three-digit numbers; was that the features of the car could be understood from the number of models. Therefore, the first number represents the serial number, the second number represents the cylinder number and the third number represents the door number. For example; When 242 is mentioned, it is a car from the 2nd series, with a 4-cylinder engine and 2-door. However, there are some exceptions. This system applies to most car models, with the exception of these exception models. Over time, numbers have ceased to contain these meanings. However, this situation is still valid for the vehicles corresponding to the mentioned period.
