Using a tractor maintenance checklist is a great way to ensure that your tractor runs smoothly, as nobody wants to lose the use of their tractor. This is possible with a basic tractor maintenance checklist.
Tractor Maintenance Checklist
Your tractor uses several consumables to operate. However, these materials do not last forever. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor these materials with a maintenance checklist.
The universal tractor maintenance checklist is as follows:
Checking the Hydraulic Oil
In most modern tractors, there is a monitoring window or level gauge beside the PTO shaft in the rear. Frequently check hydraulic oil level to avoid damage and performance issues.
Engine Oil
Just like your car or truck, your tractor also needs an oil change eventually. Unlike cars and trucks, the engine oil in a tractor should be changed based on hours of operation, not miles. Therefore, engine oil change is also included in the tractor maintenance checklist.
Air Filters
Tractors plow and sow fields, also level roads and carry materials such as dirt, sand, gravel, and fertilizer. These jobs can raise a lot of dust. That's why your air filter can quickly get clogged. The air filter in your tractor's engine prevents dust and dirt particles from destroying your engine from the inside out.
As part of the tractor maintenance checklist, you should periodically inspect your air filter or, if present, the air restriction indicator on your filter. Change air filters if you can't see daylight or if the tractor's power decreases.
Fuel Filters
Just like air filters, fuel filters prevent contaminants in your tractor's fuel from damaging your engine from the inside. Many diesel tractors include a water separator in the fuel filter. Water in diesel fuel is a real concern because it can cause irreparable damage to your engine. That's why you should be knowledgeable about your own fuel system and understand how to maintain it.
Hydraulic Systems
Modern agricultural tractors have built-in hydraulic systems to operate tools and loaders. Most of these tractors have a filter that catches contaminants in the hydraulic oil as it circulates in the tractor system. Clogged filter can cause pressure issues leading to slower or less powerful loader/hydraulic equipment. So, make sure to change them as advised by your manufacturer, as part of the tractor maintenance checklist.
Hydrometers
Before the cold winter months, it is necessary to check if your cooling fluid can still withstand freezing temperatures. You can test the freezing point of your cooling fluid using a hydrometer for cooling fluid. In addition, don't forget to do a cooling fluid pressure check to look for leaks while washing your system.
Cooling Fluid
Engine coolant collects pollutants from wear, forming accumulations in the cooling system. Regular flushing and fluid change will help prevent internal damage such as clogs and deposits in your cooling system. Also, it is highly beneficial to change your thermostat when changing your radiator.
